I’ve been buying and selling trucks in Central Texas since Lyndon Johnson was president. This checklist is the reason I still have a good name and a full wallet.

Exterior – First 60 Seconds

  1. Does the truck sit level? (springs/suspension)
  2. Tire wear even? Cupping or edges = alignment or bigger issues
  3. All four tires matching brand & tread
  4. Rust bubbles under paint (cab corners, rockers, bed)
  5. Door, hood, tailgate gaps consistent
  6. Any signs of repaint or bondo
  7. Frame rails – fresh undercoating hiding rust?
  8. Bed bolts ever replaced? (bed was off = possible wreck)
  9. Front-end collision repair evidence
  10. Windshield cracks or long stress cracks

Under the Hood

  1. Oil cap – milky/chocolate milk = blown head gasket
  2. Coolant – correct color, no oil floating
  3. Belt condition & tensioner bounce
  4. Radiator fins bent or packed with cottonwood
  5. Air filter – black death = neglected maintenance
  6. Battery terminals clean, date code
  7. Signs of EGR/DPF delete (common on diesels)
  8. Turbo oil lines weeping
  9. Transmission cooler lines soft or leaking
  10. Any fresh leaks on valve covers or rear main seal

Test Drive – The Truth Comes Out

  1. Cold start – how many revolutions before firing?
  2. Excessive white/blue/gray smoke on startup
  3. Idle smooth or lopey?
  4. Transmission shifts firm & smooth (no 1-2 slam)
  5. 4x4 engages cleanly (no grinding)
  6. Brakes – pulling or pulsation?
  7. Death wobble above 50 mph
  8. Steering play or wandering
  9. Any warning lights on cluster
  10. A/C ice-cold within 60 seconds

Final 17 Points (The Real Money Savers)

I only share the complete 47-point list in the free PDF.

“I’ve walked away from more trucks than I’ve bought using this list.
That’s exactly why I still have a good name after 60 years.”
